Somewhere between color and line lies pattern. Creating an intricate repeating element can add interest to a space or help to visually expand or shrink the proportions of a space. Pattern is an attention hog, though so make sure you think of it in terms of highlighting something you want to be highlighted and to temper its star quality with a softer secondary player.
